Living in Florida comes with its fair share of sunshine, but we all know the flip side—hurricanes. Protecting your home from wind damage isn’t just about peace of mind; it’s about ensuring your home can withstand the next storm and potentially saving money on your insurance premiums. That’s where the My Safe Florida Home Program comes in. Re-enacted during the most recent Special Session of the Florida Legislature, this program is designed to help homeowners make their homes more resilient to hurricane damage through inspections and grants for home upgrades.
What Is the My Safe Florida Home Program?
The My Safe Florida Home Program offers two main benefits to Florida homeowners:
Free Wind Mitigation Home Inspections
Eligible homeowners can apply for a free wind mitigation inspection, provided by the State of Florida. This inspection identifies areas of your home’s construction that can be improved to better protect against wind damage during hurricanes.
Wind Mitigation Grants
Based on the findings of your free inspection, you can apply for grants to help cover the costs of specific home improvements. These grants are designed to help you strengthen your home, with upgrades eligible for reimbursement after the improvements are made.
Who Is Eligible for a Wind Mitigation Inspection?
If you own a site-built, single-family home or townhouse, you can apply for a free wind mitigation inspection. There’s no obligation to apply for a grant after receiving your inspection report, but you’ll gain valuable insights into how to fortify your home against future hurricanes. Remember, the program operates on a first-come, first-served basis—so it’s important to apply as soon as possible while funding lasts.
How the Program Works: 3 Key Steps
1. INSPECT
The first step in the process is getting a quality wind mitigation inspection for your home. This inspection identifies potential weaknesses in your home’s structure and provides a roadmap for improvements. Even better, the report can help you save money on your home insurance premiums by ensuring you’re receiving all available discounts for hurricane protection.
After your inspection, you’ll receive two key benefits:
- Share the inspection report with your insurance company to confirm you’re maximizing all discounts on your hurricane insurance premium.
- Use the report as a guide to make home-hardening improvements and qualify for even more discounts.
2. STRENGTHEN
Based on the recommendations in your inspection report, you can begin making the necessary upgrades to your home. Some of the most impactful improvements include:
- Roof-to-Deck Attachments: Reinforce the roof structure to withstand stronger winds.
- Roof-to-Wall Attachments: Strengthen the connection between your roof and walls to prevent separation during a storm.
- Opening Protection: Upgrade to impact-resistant windows, doors, and garage doors to protect against flying debris.
- Secondary Water Resistance: Install a self-adhering underlayment to prevent water intrusion if your roof is damaged.
Florida homeowners should always hire licensed contractors for any improvement work. It’s recommended to obtain bids from at least three contractors so you can compare pricing and choose the best fit for your project.
3. SAVE
Once your home is fortified with wind mitigation upgrades, it’s time to save on your home insurance. Contact your insurance agent to:
- Inform them of the improvements you’ve made and claim any available discounts on the hurricane portion of your insurance premium.
- Discuss other possible ways to reduce your insurance costs.
By law, wind mitigation upgrades lead to insurance discounts, making your investment in home protection pay off in more ways than one.
